Cybersecurity Evolution
Q2
How has the sector and cybersecurity space changed since you started your career? What are the greatest recent challenges and what role does regulation play in that context?
In the past, cybersecurity was purely a topic for experts. These days, it is a topic of interest to everybody. The reasons are obvious: on the one hand, the quality of attacks themselves have changed and cybercrime has become more sophisticated and widespread. On the other hand, the importance of cyber not as a defence mechanism but media and public interest has evolved drastically. For the past 25 years we have been much more living online, and the internet has become an essential tool for everybody. The topic suddenly received a lot of attention. You only need to open your daily newspaper to see another headline stating that company x just lost x amounts of records. When it comes to regulation, I think that regulation helped to make cybersecurity a much more public topic. In a way regulation is trying to increase the general base level of security everywhere. At the same time, it would not get further than that reason for which it would still not be enough.
Q3
Can you tell us a bit more about your experience working at Check Point Software Technologies? What were some of the most interesting projects that you worked on and what recent developments are you most excited about?
I am really excited about technology, cyber and its products in many senses and it is difficult for me to choose one product or project. Having said that, there are two items that excite me a lot. First, the philosophical aspect. Our role as a security vendor is to prevent attacks. So, what excites me is not only when we find something, but when we find something that we can actually stop, so the combination of deep tech and problem-solving is fascinating. Second, modernizing and developing deep- tech (e.g. clouds, digital transformation). To give you one example: we developed a program that enables us to stay ahead of attackers with real time threat prevention, blocking both known and unknown threats. When we recently deployed it at a company, we immediately recognized that the organization was currently under attack. With the help of the program, we managed to secure the organization's data and I found the fact that we literally saved its day very gratifying.
