ישראל / Israel
Q6
Turning to Israel which is considered to be the world leader in cyber security expertise. What circumstances and factors drove that development?
We Israelis are not that structured and at times are a bit hectic. Cyber also has this hecticness to it since it moves fast - maybe that's one of the reasons why it comes easy to us? At the same time, cybersecurity has always been an important part of our DNA, because of the importance of security in general. For us, wars have always been real. Another point that contributes to making Israel an innovative nation is our army. Why is that? The army recruits very young people, knowing, that they will be able to train them for a limited time only. Whilst doing so, they try to get the best out of them before eventually releasing them to the "normal" job market. It is a unique set-up: At a very young age you get presented with the hardest challenges possible and take on unprecedented responsibilities. You leave the army equipped with a very special skill-set and in a way also with the feeling that you can do anything. This creates an environment of achievability, reason for which so many start-ups are founded. Last but not least, the Israeli "polish mothers" syndrome. The "polish mothers" syndrome - and this is a literal translation from Hebrew - expresses the fact that Israeli mothers always want their children to be successful, strong achievers and excel at everything, also to boast about their children in front of other mothers. They are very ambitious when it comes to their children which is why they really foster their talents. I think it is the combination of all that that makes us the world leader in cyber security expertise.
